Constable Charles Albert Washburn
Wright County Sheriff's Office
- End of Watch:  10/29/1884   (Age 35)
- Years of service:  Not known
-Cause of Death: Gunfire - Handgun
Constable Washburn was given a warrant to serve on Granville Spaulding, a Monticello resident who was wanted for domestic assault and had also made a number of threats.
Constable Washburn and another deputy found out that Spaulding was going to be at a home "three miles below Monticello", and he went there to wait.
When Spaulding came to the homes door, Constable Washburn shouted out to Spaulding that he was under arrest.
Gun fire sounded and shots were exchanged.
Constable Washburn was shot; however despite being wounded; Constable Washburn was able to return fire and wounded the suspect.
Ten days later on October 29, 1884 at about Noon, Constable Washburn died as a result of the gunshot injuries he received.
The funeral was held on October 31, 1884 and he was buried at the Otsego Cemetery.
The death was doubly hard on his wife, Alma, as she had just given birth weeks earlier to the couples son Charles Eldrich Washburn.
Spaulding was put on trial, convicted and sentenced to be hanged for the murder of Constable Washburn.  However the State Supreme Court vacated that sentence and Spaulding was re-tried.  In the second trial he was once again convicted, but this time only sentenced to just two years in state prison.

*Constable Washburn's name is inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.*
