Dry Fork has its fair share of Urban Legends. One of these legends refers to this bridge. When I was in high school, on occasion we would take our dates out graveyarding. On the way up to Dry Fork Cemetery, we would tell all types of ghost stories to set the mood, and get us all freaked out before going searching for Pickle Head. One final ghost story we would tell before getting to the cemetery would be the one about this bridge.
Cry Baby Bridge Legend says that many years ago, back when Dry Fork was being settled, there was a farmer who lived with his pregnant wife. They had a beautiful house next to the creek, with a bridge over it. They had a happy life, with few disagreements. The couple was doing well together, and then the baby arrived. They were excited for the new arrival. As days turned into weeks, the farmer grew insanely jealous, while his wife spent every moment tending to the baby. This baby was stealing his wife’s love away from him. One night the baby was crying very loud. The husband couldn’t take it anymore. He burst into the nursery and ripped the baby out of his wife’s arms. He made his way down to the creek and dropped the baby in. Finally the crying stopped as the baby sank under the water and was washed away. His wife raced to the creek behind him, but she was to late. In a fit of rage she attacked her husband, but the farmer was to strong for her. After a short struggle, she laid lifeless on the ground, strangled to death. The farmer dragged her body to the far end of his land and buried her.
They say that if you stop on this bridge, roll down the window, and turn off your engine; you can still here the baby crying, as the farmer’s wife searches up and down the creek. Some even say that if she passes by your car, it will refuse to start, and she will try and push your car off the bridge.
