Metcalfe PGMN Monitoring Well:
The Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network (PGMN) is a partnership program with all 36 conservation authorities and the Ministry of the Environment (MOE). The program was established in 2001 and includes about 500 wells across the Province of Ontario. South Nation Conservation currently manages 18 wells throughout South Nation watershed under the PGMN program. These wells provide valuable information about the quantity and quality of groundwater; information is used to support several Conservation Authority programs.
All PGMN wells are equipped with a water level data logger which takes hourly measurement of the groundwater level. In addition, groundwater samples are collected from each well in the fall; samples are sent to a MOE lab for chemical analysis. In addition, many of the wells are equipped with telemetry units (in the green box, with the antennae in the circular tube above), which allows remote data retrieval of the groundwater level data.
