Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around the Manawatu.

Welcome aboard the WMR direct construction service to Shannon.

The Wellington and Manawatu Rail Company (WMR) built a wharf and put in a small siding in to it at Buckley's Clearing, a naturally open space in a dense bush forest. This was, of course, before the stopbanks were built, and indeed, even before the farmland was here. The wharf was used to ship in materials via the Manawatu River which were then railed to the depot at Shannon for the construction of the WMR line between Shannon and Palmerston. The siding was only used for for the construction years, 1882 - 1886, and was removed once the wharf was no longer required. The stopbanks on the river are visible just beyond the end of the road, but it is all private property, so this is the closest we can get to it. The rail line curved onto the the unsealed road you came down, then at the cache site curved to the left to meet the wharf, about 100m downstream from here.

The house overlooking the cache is owned by the farm manager. They know of the cache and are expecting you. You are looking for a 500ml cylinder container. The ground can be muddy. Take care and good luck!

Get on to Buckley Road using the Waypoint on this cache, not via the paper road that Google sends you down
