“The Wizard of Oz” is one of the all-time classic films. Besides the story that we actually see on-screen, there are many intriguing tales about its production, everything from Shirley Temple having been the first choice to play the role of Dorothy, to, well into the shooting, Buddy Ebsen having had to abandon the Tin Man role when the aluminum powder in the make-up caused him severe health problems (but we still get to hear his voice in the film). What you probably don’t know is that the film, like many others of the era, was shot in multiple versions to play to audiences in countries and cultures other than the U.S. and Canada. Since, as Wikipedia tells us, “Oz” has been the colloquial name for Australia since the early 20th century, and since its populace has always taken pride in being a bit idiosyncratic, it’s even possible that Frank Baum was thinking of Australia when he wrote the series, and needed a name for the land. In any event, it proved unavoidable that, in making the alternative versions, some of the classic lines from the film were going to read ever so slightly differently. To get the coordinates for this simple mystery cache, you’ll need to consider some of the variants from the Australian version of the film, identify the character or performer corresponding to the “that doesn’t sound quite the way I remember it” quote, calculate some digital roots, and do some grade school level math. I would have loved to make it even easier for you, but was unable to find any suitable Ottawa-Gatineau area yellow brick roads that would support a legal GZ at their end.

Getting down to puzzle:

For the quote “Lions and wombats, and crocs! Oh My!” let K be the digital root of the first name of the character in the movie, and let L be the digital root of the last name of that character.

For the quote “If I only had a beer,” let M be the digital root of the usual first name of the performer who played the role, and let N be the digital root of that performer’s last name.

For the quote “Ooh, what a smell of Vegemite,” let P be the digital root of the name of the character, let Q be the digital root of the first name of the performer, and let R be the digital root of that perfomer’s last name.

For the quote “Pay no attention to that mate behind the curtain,” let S be the digital root of the first name of the performer, and let T be the digital root of that performer’s last name.

For the quote “And your little wallaby too,” let U be the digital root of the first name of the performer, and let V be the digital root of that performer’s last name.

For the quote “I’ve a feeling we’re not in Queensland any more,” let W be the digital root of the first name of the performer, and let X be the digital root of that performer’s last name.

For the quote “Somewhere under the rainbow, way down low,” let Y be the digital root of the first name of the performer, and let Z be the digital root of that performer’s last name.

The cache is at N45 (W-N)(Y+R).(T-Q)(S-V-X)(L-U), W075 QM.U(K+V)(Z+R+P), where a term in parentheses is to be taken as a single digit. The container is a small lock and lock “half sandwich” box, and the log is inside it in a 35 mm film canister. I let my GPSr average for five minutes on this one, but if you find that you need to worry about precision in the coordinates, then you’re not looking in the right location.
