Between 1948 and 1962 Derek was Australian national champion and raced cars for the Lotus team and assisted in the development of cars and toured the European race circuits with the Lotus team.
Derek established the original Decca’s Place Restaurant and Gamba Recording Studios in Melbourne Street in the sixties.
He purchased one of the first Moog synthesizers to be exported from the United States of America and provided access to the University of Adelaide that established the first practical course in Electronic Music in Australia.
For some time the Gamba Studio was located in a Futuro building located on a vacant allotment in Melbourne Street.
Derek loved technology and was one of the first to get into PCs, faxes, mobile satellite and online services.
He took thousands of photographs, some of which are now featured internationally.
Derek was a victim of very high interest rates and lost all his property and other assets in the stock market crash of 1987.
In 1996 he moved to Marananga in the Barossa Valley, where he operated a Bed and Breakfast and Multimedia Gallery combining his vast collection of slides and photographs with the many sounds that he had recorded.
Derek died age 74 in 2002 after a fierce battle with injuries sustained from a horrific car accident when an out of control car crashed into his stationary car at 90kph. To add to his trouble he was battling cancer at the same time.
