The Vodno mountain is situated on the southern side of the Skopje valley. The highest peak on Vodno mountain is Krstovar peak, on 1,066 meters a.s.l. From the top of Vodno is a wonderful view of Skopje valley, spreading north, while on the south side lies Jakupica Massif and its highest peak, Solunska Glava (2,538 meters).
There are many interesting places to see on the Vodno mountain. At Sredno Vodno (Middle Vodno, 640 meters a.s.l.), there is a chalet, hotel "Vodno" and the church of Holy Mother. You can get to Sredno Vodno by walk, bike, public bus or by car. During sundays Sredno Vodno is unpleasantly crowded!
A symbol of the Christianity, The Millennium Cross, was built on the Krstovar peak, in 2002, marking 2000 years of Christianity. It is considered to be the highest Christian Cross in Europe.

At an attitude of 750-800 meters a.s.l., on the eastern side of the mountain (2 km from Sredno Vodno), at the end of the new trim trail, is the medieval fortress, Town of Marko.
Some 8 km from Sredno Vodno (Middle Vodno) is the St. Pantelejmon monastery, dating from the year 1164 AD. It is well-known due to the beautiful frescoes, of which the most famous is "Lamentation over the body of Christ", painted 140 years before Giotto's "Pieta"!!!. In the monastery complex there is a restaurant with a wide choice of delicious Macedonian national meals, with a very pleasant interior in a traditional Macedonian national style.
Many trails lead to the top of Vodno. Depending on your time, your body condition and on the time of the year you can choose long and moderately steep trails shadowed by trees, or “Die Hard” trails for sportsmen, maniacs and some geocachers
From the Millennium Cross on the top leads a very popular trail to the Lake Matka, some 14 km long.
At 2011, a gondola lift was built to allow an easy ascent to visit the Millennium Cross. The lift starts at Sredno Vodno (Middle Vodno) and ends at the Cross, taking approximately 8 minutes to ascend.
In the fifties of the last century children of Skopje city were very happy. A brand new Children holiday resort was built on the slopes of Vodno. It is hard to imagine now that this place resounded with laughter and children voices. As many things from the past (specially socialistic past) in this country gradually died, so did the children resort. Only one building somehow resists the time, weather, lack of investment. This building functions as a sort of mountain cottage, where only one man, Dule, works. Here you can buy some refreshment and get rest.
Close to this children resort, in 80-ties of the last century was built, but never finished, a giant, ugly concrete object. It should be a new modern holiday resort for kids, now completely abandoned. The Mother Nature, in her endless mercy and wisdom, solves this “problem” on her way. After years of quiet and persistent work of the nature, this monster now looks like the Sleeping Beauty’s castle, all covered with creepers and trees…. Yupiiiii !!!!!!!!!!!!

Only remnants of previous children house...

The cache is a small glass jar with a red lid. Please, be aware of snakes, especially in summer! Check the cache place with a stick or some branch first!!!
NOTE: in the jar is a small gift for FTF and STF: two coupons for two drinks for FTF, and two coupons for two drinks for STF. When you find the coupons, go to the “cottage” (see a photo) and ask for Dule, the manager. He will serve you with two drinks (beer, tea, or juice). This cottage is open every Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but Dule often stays here on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (the other days he goes for supplies). So - Cheers!
Dule's cottage

How to get there: From Sredno Vodno (Middle Vodno) go west on asphalt road about 3 km and here you are! Then you can continue your "cache tour" from the Children resort. From here take the forest path west, on your way you can hunt the cache "Pine woods", then "The bunkers". From the Bunkers you go back the same trail, some 300 meters. Here the trails split in two (a group of birch trees grow here) and you take the right path which will lead you to the "Millennium Cross". A nice half-day walk on Vodno!
