Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Hell Hole...

The undulating terrain that makes up the Toowoomba ranges was caused by volcanic activity that occurred millions of years ago.  If you climb to the peak of Table Top Mountain, or take a walk around the paths of Redwood Park, you will see for yourself some of the magnificent rock formations that were formed during the areas volatile history.  There are some great vantage points and pleasant walks around the area that will provide some magnificent backdrops and avail you of fantastic views of the peaks and plateaus that form the Toowoomba Ranges.
The Hell Hole is situated in Glen Lomond Park just to the South of Toowoomba City.  It appears to be a less visited part of the ranges, but provides a peaceful and tranquil surrounding for all to enjoy.  This is a good opportunity to take a walk along the path of an area that you might not typically go to and enjoy the geological aspects of the “Hell Hole”.  Once you have noted the information for this cache, why not continue down the path and see what other geological features of the ranges are visible from  a more Southern aspect.

To log this Earth Cache, you must get information from a sign at Waypoint 1 and answer questions about the geological features at Waypoint 2.
Please do not disclose any of the information in your logs, but it would be great to hear what you thought about the area when logging your visit at GZ.
Email the answers to me through my GC profile and I will normally respond within 24 hours.  Feel free to log your find when you have submitted your responses via email.  If there are any discrepancies in the detail, I will contact you for more information.
It would be great if you could take a picture of your GPS with the sign at WP1, or with yourself if you like.  This is optional, but would be great to form a cache album of the visitors.  Why not make it a bit of fun and see what you can do to make the photo “interesting”…

The listed coordinates will put you at a sign (Waypoint 1), where you can read about the areas geology.  Answer the following questions.
Q1.  What is beneath your feet and how was it formed.
Q2.  Name the three distinct levels that you are standing on.

Proceed to Waypoint 2, where you will see the Hell Hole and the escarpment on your left hand side.  From this vantage point, answer the following questions.
Q1.  What colours do you see in the weathered rock across the Hellhole.
Q2.  Using the information gained at WP1, what type of rock do you think forms the escarpment you can see from here?  Explain your answer.

I hope you enjoy the area and its history.
