Geocache Description:

We had to remove our original cache due to building work here and decided we'd create a new cache as the locations have changed. The cache is suitable for disabled cachers but the final hide might be a bit of a stretch from a wheelchair. Parking is available very near the cache page coordinates.

Black Rock is a picturesque picnic site on the banks of the river Severn between the two Severn Bridges. It has impressive views across to Avonmouth and of the two bridges and is the home of the Black Rock Lave Net fishermen.

Lave net fishing has been practiced here for centuries. It is a very old technique with the fisherman standing in the water with a hand held net. The local fisherman at Black Rock still carry out this old tradition and you can come and watch them. They have an excellent website telling about their craft and when they will be fishing.

Since pre-historic times Black Rock has been a crossing point on the river and in Roman and Medieval times there was a ferry here. History tells a story of King Charles fleeing the roundheads by crossing from Wales to England. His pursuers were also taken across on the ferry but the ferryman, loyal to the King, disembarked them on a sandbank called English Stones telling them they were on the English shore and let them drown as the tide came in. When the railways came in the 19th Century, before the Severn Railway tunnel was built, the train stopped here and the passengers boarded the ferry to England.

At the cache coordinates you are looking for a colourful fisherman. The final cache coordinates are:
N 51° 35.abc W 002° 42.def where:
a = the number of letters in his first name -1.
b = the number of letters in his last name +1.
c = the number of letters in his first name.
d = the number of letters in the second word of what he did.
e = the number of letters in the first word of what he did -1.
f = the number of letters in the first word of what he did + the number of letters in his first name.

The Severn estuary has the second highest tidal reach in the world - some 40 feet between low and high tides so please take care, particularly with young children. The rocks can be slippery and dangerous and the mud is very messy. The cache does not require you to venture over either!

Whilst here you chould also do GCJWX6 which is just a short walk along the bank of the river.
