Essi delimitano viottoli e campagne, proteggono prati e campi da vento e siccità, riparano dall'intrusione di bestiame al pascolo, essi fungono da argini alle acque improvvise dei torrenti in piena. In questi muretti trovano sicuro rifugio innumerevoli utili organismi; attorno ad essi prosperano arbusti che poi i paesani da sempre utilizzano come legna da ardere.
