90% of Kiwifruit exports are grown in the area around Te Puke - the Kiwifruit Capital of the World! That's a big chunk of the 100 million trays sent to 62 countries around the world each year.

Seeds were brought to New Zealand from China in the early 1900's and the "Chinese Gooseberry" became a bit of a novelty crop. Later it was renamed the "Melonette" and then marketed as "Kiwifruit" in 1959.

Kiwifruit have been grown commercially in this area since 1953, the "Hayward green" variety being the most popular. In 1998 “Zespri Gold” kiwifruit was introduced to the market and experiments are being carried out on new varieties including a peelable kiwifruit and "kiwiberry", a small bite-sized kiwifruit-like fruit.

In 1987, a grower-controlled marketing organization was formed. Within 10 years, Zespri (as it was later named) had become a hugely successful marketing body for the Kiwifruit Industry.

A Kiwifruit is a rich source of vitamin C (twice the amount of an orange), and has very high levels of Vitamin E. It also has a high fibre content, making it a healthy food option.

Kiwifruit canker, or Psa, was discovered in the Bay of Plenty region in November 2010 and has spread to more than 1000 orchards throughout New Zealand since. This bacterial disease has had a significant impact on the economy of this region. Ultimately, the cost of combating this disease could reach $885 million.
