Geocache Description:

A local feature.

The Apple Barrel Floodway is one or the several flood water escape routes in the Wairarapa. This floodway is designed to relive the Waiohine river in times of high flood by diverting excessive flows directly to the Ruamahanga River and thereby reducing the risk of flooding of Greytown. The high water flow peak of the big flood of January 1940 is marked on the fence to show water depth at the point of the cache.

Other significant floodways in the southern Wairarapa include Bidwells Cutting and the Oporua floodways both of which are designed to divert excessive water flows in the Ruamahanga directly into Lake Wairarapa. Even with this protection it can be expected that Martinborough will be completely isolated by flood waters once or twice each year. Please park safely, use stealth and take care when pulling the cache container apart and reassembling it. Cache container is a nano by courtesy of Holiday Inns.
