Geocache Description:

This is an easy cache located on a walkway around Governors Bay in Lyttelton Harbour.  It has the advantage of being near a car park and picnic area, ideal for those with children as it is less than a 5 minute walk to the cache.  It’s a very pleasant stroll with good harbour views along the old foreshore road which is now a walking and cycling track between Allandale and Governors Bay.

The walk begins at Allandale Reserve, where there is a car park and picnic area about two kilometres south of the Governors Bay on the Governors Bay-Teddington Road. You can also access it from the north end from the wharf in Governors Bay. The walk is an easy 35-45 minute stroll one way.

The foreshore road was first constructed in 1857 by the prisoners from the Lyttelton Prison (1851-1922). It was later widened for the horse coach service that began in the early 1880s that operated between Charteris Bay, Teddington and Allandale to the railhead at Lyttelton. Trips were made twice a day and the coach carried up to 10 passengers plus mail. The grid coordinates will take you to the cache and two features that will remind you of its past use.

Being near the head of the harbour, the bay is largely mudflats. At low tide, on the mud you will see crabs scavenging. Standing on the rocks you will see herons and Kingfishers are common though shy, perching in nearby trees.

The cache is a plastic container. There is space for swaps and trackables. When hidden it contained a log book pencil and pencil sharpener and it was full of treasures.
