Geocache Description:

Participants: Please note that PennDOT requires a new release form to be submitted each calendar year.

Lehigh Valley Geocachers have Adopted-A-Highway and will be picking up trash on it for the 4th time. We will meet at 1 PM on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Lower Nazareth Township Park. You can park at the coordinates posted on this page.

Our 2-mile section of highway is on Route 191 from Route 22 just North of the bridge to the intersection of 191 and Newburg Road at the Newburg Inn. The signs are Northbound just North of the Route 22 Bridge and Southbound in front of the Newburg Inn. There are signs installed below the existing signs that read "LEHIGH VALLEY GEOCACHERS".

If you would like to participate, please post a "Will Attend" log on this cache page and fill out this Release Form. The Release Form needs to be signed and returned no later than Sunday, June 16, 2013 so we can pick up the correct amount of supplies for the event. Cachers under 18 years of age require a Parent or Guardian signature. Only cachers 8 years old and older may participate. The Release Forms can be mailed to PO Box 99, Nazareth, PA 18064 or faxed to 610-365-2048 or emailed to greyvingeo@gmail.com

Rules:

Safety is a top priority
All participants must wear orange safety vests (provided by PennDOT)
"Litter Crew Ahead" signs must be posted (provided by PennDOT)
Participants must be at least 8 years old
All Participants must fill out and sign the PennDOT Release Form (each calendar year)
All Participants must view the PennDOT safety video (click the Play All button)
All Participants must review and be familiar with the Adopt-A-Highway Safety Requirements (see below)

Adopt-A-Highway Safety Requirements:
Participants shall:

Pick up one side at a time when cleaning a multi-lane highway with a median. Vehicles shall remain on the same side of the highway as the volunteers.
Never cross over or pick up trash on the traveled pavement.
Upon arriving at the work site, immediately display PennDOT's official "Litter Crew Ahead" safety sign in advance of the pickup site.
Not posess or drink alcoholic beverages.
Conduct at least one safety orientation meeting during the year.
Provide appropriate and adequate adult supervision when youth groups are involved in litter pickups; that is, one adult per eight participants between the ages of 8 and 17.
Avoid peak traffic hours, holiday weekends and extreme inclement weather conditions.
Stay clear of all construction areas.
Conduct pre-pickup safety talks. This is in the agreement.
Avoid all horseplay or demonstrations of any nature on the right-of-way.
Wear safety vest provided by PennDOT.
Avoid hazardous materials such as old car batteries or any unidentified/questionable items and animal carcasses.
Be aware of all known allergies of volunteers before participation (bee stings, poison ivy, poison oak)

Adopt-A-Highway Safety Recommendations:
Participants should:

Know emergency procedures such as the location of the nearest emergency facility and how to quickly summon the police or an ambulence.
Provide their own first-aid kit and include kit with other supplies during litter pickups.
Avoid overexertion and heat problems by drinking water and taking breaks.
Carpool to the litter pickup site.
Wear the recommended attire: long sleeves, blue jeans or long pants, leather shoes or boots and gloves. Wear the safety vest provided by PennDOT.
Be careful of contact with poision plants, bees, wasps, hornets, ticks, fire ants, and snakes. The recommended attire will usually prevent irritations from most poison plants.
Pay special attention to the handling of broken glass. Participants must be careful not to step or kneel on broken glass.
Be aware of visibility problems.
Be prepared for any unexpected behavior of motorists.
Park vehicles a safe distance from the traveled roadway.
Always face oncoming traffic.
Do not stand or jump on guide rail, drainage pipes, or on concrete walls.
Be aware of all known allergies of volunteers before participation.
Participants must be careful not to step or kneel on broken glass.
Avoid all horseplay or demonstration of any nature on the right-of-way.

Gloves and trash bags will also be provided by PennDOT and they will haul away the trash bags after the event. You should bring protective clothing, sunscreen, drinking water, and a "grabber tool" if you don't want to constantly bend over. People unable to walk long distances or confined to a wheelchair can help in the staging area (Lower Nazareth Township Park). The length of the event will depend on how many people participate, but should be about 3 hours. Currently there are over 1100 caches within 15 miles of this event.
