The Guest River is a beautiful river flowing through the mountainous region of southwestern Virginia. A railroad once traveled alongside the river through the valleys and gorges. Since rail traffic has diminished, much of these old rail lines have been turned into hikig trails under the 'Rails-To-Trails' program. The Guest River Gorge Trail is one of these.
This trail is an improved trail with few steep gradients as it travels down to the small town of Carfax and on to the Clinch River. Lots of bicycles use this trail along with the many hikers. From the parking area at N 36° 55.401 W 082° 27.095, you will walk down through an old tunnel and across an improved trestle. There are some spectacular views from the trestle, so stop and enjoy! Keep walking down the trail and you will pass the 1 mile marker. Just after the 1 mile marker, you will pass a bench on the right. About 100 feet beyond the bench there is a spur trail off of the main trail going to the right down to the river. Cache is just off this trail.
