Geocache Description:

DO NOT LOOK FOR THIS AT NIGHT DURING FLOOD SEASON!  The cache was placed above the 2011 flood crest level (as inferred from the colouring of nearby trees), so I am hopeful that it will not be submerged by the rising Assiniboine.

The Maryland Bridge was first constructed in 1894.  At that time it marked the western boundary of the City of Winnipeg, and so was sometimes referred to as the Boundary Bridge.  The steel truss was replaced with a concrete arch structure in 1920-21, which was later replaced with the present twinned structure in 1969-70.  The bridge’s last major renovations took place in 2005-06.

The Maryland Bridge begins at the intersection of Wellington Crescent and Academy Road to the south.  Northbound traffic travels over the Assiniboine River onto Sherbrook Street; southbound traffic crosses the bridge having come from Maryland Street.

In 1937, a 330-ton counterweight fell onto the bridge’s deck in the middle of the night, making it the site of the only bridge disaster in Winnipeg’s history.  When this bridge was demolished in 1969, a corner post was salvaged and preserved as a cairn monument, which currently stands in a small park at the southwest corner of the bridge.

Congratulations to JB. for the fourth of four FTFs in the series!

Congratulations also to peggersa&a for finding your very first cache!
