Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates

This cache is an easy version of The Onion. Like “The Onion,” it has both a desk puzzle that you must solve to determine the real coordinates and a field puzzle that you must solve to access the log. But both these puzzles should be relatively simple.

Without the puzzles, this cache’s Difficulty Rating would be 1½ stars. The desk puzzle adds another ½ star, as does the field puzzle.

The Desk Puzzle

I like this desk puzzle for a couple reasons.

First, lots of people (like Ms. CanadianRockies) have trouble properly “seeing” autostereographic (e.g., Magic Eye) images. They shouldn’t have any problems with this image.

Second, people with little or no puzzle-solving experience (like Ms. CanadianRockies) might figure out the final coordinates quicker than some hardcore “puzzleheads.”

Directions: When you’re ready to view the puzzle image, click the button below. Position your eyes in the centre of the image, about one foot away from your computer monitor. Look through the image, loosely “focusing” your vision several inches behind your monitor. Give yourself a minute to let your eyes relax, adjusting your blank stare backward and forward slightly. Suddenly, the mystery text will reveal itself and all will be clear.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.

The Cache

There’s a parking within 20 metres of the cache. At the cache coordinates, search for an ammo box with a camouflage paint job. When you open the ammo box, you’ll encounter a field puzzle.

The cache is a waterproof match container hidden inside the ammo box. To claim a find for this cache, you must find the match container and sign its log.

Please Note: No undue force or tools are needed to find the cache, so leave your screwdrivers and crowbars behind. Bring your wits instead.

Credits

Congratulations to VA6GDG, Digital Zoom, and Bearberry and the Cub for their FTFs.

Many thanks to the CrimsonPirate, who painted the ammo box’s camouflage.

The photograph of the scallion was created by Shizhao.

The desk puzzle is a variation of a puzzle cache I solved years ago. I wish I could remember which one it was. The field puzzle is a variation of a cache I saw on the Groundspeak Forum's Cool Cache Containers thread.
