Geocache Description:

I recently moved into the Pine Lake area...being a cacher, of course the first thing I did was look up what caches were nearby. I was quite surprised to find that there were none in Pine Lake!

With all the nature trails and wilderness, I started thinking a lot of caches could go here. This is the second cache in my series of Pine Lake caches, serving to both get people out to this nice piece of land and encourage others to hide caches here too!

This cache is located at the beginning of the Eastern Wetlands trail. Park in the general parking area. PLEASE RECOVER THE CACHE WITH THE ROCK THAT KEEPS IT OUT OF SIGHT!

Here you see where the wetlands and flume combine before they travel by pipe under Spruce Drive into the lake. Snapfinger Creek also runs beneath the street, continuing its course along the right of the earthen dam.

To the east of this bridge is one of Georgia's first constructed wetlands, built in 2005, with funding from the Clean Water Act of 1972. The purpose of the wetlands is to clean the water of Snapfinger Creek as it joins other creeks and streams on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

In addition to this necessary work, the wetlands provide for a great diversity of species by creating habitat and food sources. When water flow accelerates during rains, the wetlands act as a kind of sponge that mitigates flooding.

Listen and watch for birds throughout the walk. On a single day in early 2012, the Audubon Society spotted 39 different species of birds. Hawks and woodpeckers particularly like this area.
