Geocache Description:

A Warlock is a term for a male witch. Growing up, this is what many of the neighborhood kids thought that the private, eccentric, man who once lived on the property was.

Information about the wildlife sanctuary:

The entrance is on Bulkeley Hill Rd. (at the parking coordinates.) This piece of woods is sandwiched between Bulkeley Hill Rd, and Kudas lake behind Evergreen Terr. Once parked, the path, while unmarked, is easy to see and follow down to the Warlock’s house, and to the Warlock’s Lakeside cabin. It is mostly downhill, so expect a moderate but constant climb upon your return to the car.
This area was once owned by an eccentric postal worker, who Built, by his own hand several unique structures in the woods. The Scott half of Scottnlyssa, has informed the Lyssa half, that as a child he played in these woods often.  A knew that the house that was built here (only ruins remain) is only part of the many unique structures on the property.

The postal worker had built several rooms and tunnels below ground that included a room with several beds in it, and a room full of shoes too.  Some sections of concrete built tunnel have collapsed, but other sections are still safely accessible if you want to explore them. It would be wise to bring a flashlight with you for underground exploration.  Scott theorizes that the postal worker may have been building tunnels since the 50’s and that maybe it was suppose to be his own fall out bunker, but really doesn’t know what drove this guy. While the ground is stable, there are a few deep holes, and openings where tunnels have partially collapsed, so be cautions where you step.   A tunnel entrance that is easy to get into, and out of can be found at:  41.33.823, 72.20.919 (we call it the tire entrance).

Part of the demise of the house probably partially comes from the postal workers age and being unable to maintain what he started, but a number of years ago he says some kids were partying in the area and light off some fireworks that caught the house on fire (approx 2006).

It is unclear when this was turned into the wildlife sanctuary that it is now, but certainly it happened after the owner’s passing.  Here is the obituary of the last owner, found in the Hartford courant:
February 3, 1999
SMITH, Frank -  Frank Smith, 90, of Buckley Hill Rd., Colchester, died Sunday (Jan. 31, 1999) at his residence. Born Oct. 30, 1908 in N.Y.C. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the Postal Division. He was a retired Rural Postal carrier for many years. He was married to the late Bernadine (Vaccaro) Smith who died in 1975.

BE CAUTIOUS: WEAR GOOD HIKING SHOES - there is a lot of old debris on the ground surrounding the house and grounds,  don’t be surprised to find charred wood, nails, tires, 2 old  rusting cars, bed springs and furniture in the surrounding area.

Information about the cache:

The cache is a micro camouflaged glass spice container(would hold about 3oz of liquid). Some height and flexibility may be needed to reach this cache. BYOP, and watch your step. This is NOT suitable for children to reach.

This is the first of a series of 3 caches in this sanctuary. The first and second caches are much easier to reach, than the third in terms of terrain.
The Caches in this series are:
1.       Warlocks series #1 – Out on a Ledge
2.       Warlock’s series #2 – Lakeside Cabin
3.       Warlock series #3 – The Giant Ent’s
