Geocache Description:

'Oh, the Pity of It!'

There is a small angle statue overlooking the grave of Irene Hays; a little girl that died in a tragic accident in 1891 at the age of seven.

According to the April 9, 1891, issue of 'The Tuskaloosa Gazette,' little Irene Hays and another girl, Ethel Black, were at an amateur performance at the Academy of Music when they 'were horribly and perhaps fatally burned in one of the saddest events that has happened in this city in many a day.'

The accident occurred when the performance was nearly over. 'During the closing tableau, while one of the young ladies was holding aloft a calcium light, and was surrounded by a group of children, a spark fell from the torch igniting the dresses of the two little girls, each of whom was enveloped in flames,' the article said.

The article went on to explain that 'brave men stood horrified and helpless, and ladies fainted at the heart rending sight.'

The headline in the Tuscaloosa Times that day read 'Oh, the Pity of It!'
Black survived, but Hays died at home two days later.

The proceeds from that night's musical production went to the purchase of an angel statue from Italy to overlook Hays' grave.

To locate the final for this cache, gather information from the story as well as from the angel grave marker.
