Geocache Description:

Miscou Island Lighthouse area.

One never gets tired of visiting Miscou Island. One of the interesting buildings is St John United Church near the lighthouse.

Saint John's United Church was built in 1912 close to the lighthouse at Miscou Point by Clément Desylva, a local resident. His salary was 60¢ per day and he worked from dawn until dusk. As there were no roads on the island at the beginning of the 20th century, he left home very early in the morning to walk to the building site. Electricity was never installed in Saint John's United Church. Oil lamps and an oil furnace still provide light and heat. A minister, usually from Miramichi, comes to the island for services four or five times a year, between April and September. About 25 individuals still worship at the church. Since its opening, four weddings have been celebrate at Saint John's. George Brown and Sadie Chiasson were the first to be wed in 1913 and the last, Russell and Kelly Vibert, was celebrated in 1997 by Reverend Ronald Feltmate. On the interior wall of the church is a bronze plaque donated by the Vibert family in memory of their son Milton, killed during the Second World War.
