nodderbug: Getting to be too many DNF's on this one and we intended it to be fun. We will continue to monitor this area because we have dear ones interred here. ThanX for the memories and we'll give this space up for another cacher.

Geocache Description:

The container is outside of the cemetery.  Please replace exactly where found for others to enjoy.

The Enid Cemetery was estalished after the land run of 1893 when Enid began its settlement.  Hymen and Cora Anderson had staked a claim north of here on Oxford Street.  On May 30, 1897, their one year old son, Lee Stuart died and was buried south of their house.  The cemetery grew as others were buried nearby.

In 1898, Anderson sold 10 1/2 acres on the northwest corner of Grand and Willow Streets to the Catholic Church, now called Calvary Cemetery.  Later 15 more acres of the Anderson property were sold that became the original addition of the Enid Cemetery.  This area contained the first Anderson gravesite along with other family members.

In 1913, ten more acres were added to the Enid Cemetery and later platted.  The mausoleum was added by 1921.

About 430 pioneers who made the famous Cherokee Strip land run are buried here, including this cache owner's grandparents.  Additional historical archives are available at the cemetery office.
