Geocache Description:

This cache is placed as part of the New York State Park Saratoga/Capital District Region Geocache Challenge.

There are 50 geocaches hidden within 16 state parks and state historic sites in the Saratoga/Capital District region, and geocachers finding them all will be eligible to enter their names in a drawing for valuable prizes.  If you are interested in taking up the challenge, you can pick up a geocache passport at any of the participating parks and sites, or download the passport at www.nysparks.com.

This cache contains a unique stamp which must stay with the cache.  Use this stamp to stamp your passport.  This stamp is NOT a trade item.

Park at the park office parking lot (N42 26.082 W074 27.795) and find the Long Path marked with green paint, heading north.  Cache is a large container.  As you enjoy the view of the Schoharie Valley keep an eye for the New York State bird, the bluebird.  This trail runs through good bluebird habitat and several bluebird nesting boxes are present along the edge of the soccer fields.  Along this trail you will notice numerous deer trails leading from/to NYS Rt. 30.  The park is a natural wintering area for local deer, making this section of NYS Rt. 30 very dangerous at times, especially during the fall breeding season, winter, and early spring.  The items in the cache are park souvenirs and do not need to be replaced with a trade item.  Enjoy

Bluebirds like to nest on the edges of meadow/field areas.  Bluebird nesting boxes are typically installed with two in close proximity to each other and the next nearest set of boxes 100 or more feet away.  Mine Kill State Park typically offers a bluebird box building program at least once a year.  Call the park for information on our next program.

Mine Kill State Park is open during the summer months from 7:30am to 8pm and 7:30am to 4pm the rest of the year.  There is a $3 entry fee into the park during the summer months. You can reach the park office at 518-827-6111 for more information.
