Geocache Description:

In this EarthCache experience, you will be visiting Pike's Peak State Park in northeastern Iowa. As part of the Paleozoic Plateau region of Iowa, the park is filled with interesting geologic features. While the park is named for a peak, this EarthCache will have you examine a small valley within the park.

Pike’s Peak State Park is part of the Paleozoic Plateau region of Iowa. This is a unique area because it was not affected by the most recent glaciers that shaped the geography of the rest of the state. In the absence of the glaciers’ flattening effects, the Paleozoic Plateau contains a wide variety of landscapes. The area has been shaped largely by the erosion of the sedimentary rock that lies there. The rock is made up of limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and shale. Because these types of rock all react differently to erosion, they can form many different geologic features. These include the many valleys throughout the Paleozoic Plateau.
