This is the third cache in a walking loop containing 4 caches that takes you up a popular dirt hiking trail and down a narrow slot canyon that is filled with a beautiful rainbow of colored rock formations. The round-trip hiking distance is 1.75 miles and the elevation change is 310 Feet.
After leaving Crossroads #2 cache, continue west up the River Mountain Trail along a wash in a wide colorful slot canyon. At the sign pointing to the right to take you out of the wash an along the trail to the northwest, continue up the wash to the left southwest to the Top of the Slot. This is a small pill bottle, log only BYOP. Watch for extreme mountain bikers coming down the Ginger Trail and into the slot canyon. I have never seen them, (they most likely run this trail on weekends) but they leave lots of tracks! This is the top of the loop and is 310 feet higher than the parking lot. From here you can look to the west and see the 2nd platform for the very popular zip lines on Red Mountain. You can actually see 3 of the 4 segments of cables for this zip line, and if anyone is using it you can hear the zip liners whooping and hollering as they zip down the cables to each platform. Be careful of desert critters, carry plenty of water and do NOT travel this slot canyon if raining or about to rain.
