Cowboys in Alaska!
A little known fact about the famous wild west Lawman Wyatt Earp is that between 1897 and 1901, he called Alaska home!
In 1897, Wyatt and Josephine Earp left San Francisco to capitalize on the new Nome Gold Rush.
By September of 1899 Earp had built, owned, and operated The Dexter Saloon, the first two story wooden building in Nome!
When they finally left the state in 1901 to pursue interests in a new gold rush, they took with them an estimated $80,000 in profits!
(This is equivalent to $2.17 million in 2012 dollars!)
The Dexter Saloon still stands to this day, though it hasn't been a saloon for some time! The building is located over on Front street across from the Visitors' Center, the reason we couldn't put one closer!
(above written by TrailCachin, this was the one cache he really wanted to plant and tell people about!)
Please re-hide as found.
Happy Hunting to All Who Seek!
