661 mph is the Speed of Sound at 35,000 feet Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

bernsa: Turnout was a little slim, but I had a great time with everyone who came to visit and experience what it's like to go Sonic! (There I said it!)

I enjoyed Airbus or Boeing (or something else!) too even if perhaps it came down to a guessing game. On that note, I'll spare publicizing the actual scores, but Team ABC won a nice little US Airways Boeing 757-200 for Monster-Truck!

661 mph is the Speed of Sound at 35,000 feet (GC4CNPT) was active on June 9, 2013. There were 8 attendees including my mom and musclemusher who have not logged on-line, but it was a very nice group!

Congratulations to UnNamed and Bella_Candy for the FTA! I had to race them down Route 35 myself!

Geocache Description:

A quick meet and greet to catch up with caching friends and (optionally) grab a treat and maybe some geek talk about airplanes in classic Central Jersey Geocaching debate: Arbs vs. Bng

Haven't seen so many of my Central Jersey Geocaching friends I think it would be nice to say hi while I'm in town before I race off to experience life on the edge of the sound barrier.

I was curious what the speed of sound actually was for when I leave on a trip the next day. I know airplanes cruise at about 35,000 feet and that they cruise at sub-sonic speeds. Mach 1.0 is the speed of sound, and airplanes generally cruise at Mach 0.75 to Mach 0.85. But now I know how fast they need to go to break the sound barrier and you do too!

Meetup time will start at 7pm and last until the crowd decides to breakup.  Maybe an hour... maybe more.

The location is:
Sonic Drive-In
1511 Route 35 North
Middletown, NJ 07748

We'll try to gather on the patio under the canopy where there's some tables.

At about 7:30pm we will play a short game of "A, B, or C", and the winner gets bragging rights (and possibly a small prize!)

Trackables are welcome, and I'm making some rounds throught the Upper Rockies and the Adirondacks in the weeks following the event, as well as always heading home to Metro DC for anything destined for those regions.

For the curious amongst you here's some information about mach speeds:

SPEED OF SOUND AT DIFFERENT ALTITUDES

Mach 1.0 is the speed of sound in air, so a plane flying Mach 2.0 is flying twice as fast as the speed of sound. The speed of sound is not a constant, but depends on altitude (or actually the temperature at that altitude). A plane flying Mach 1.0 at sea level is flying about 1225 km/h (661 Knots, 761 mph), a plane flying Mach 1.0 at 30000 ft is flying 1091 km/h (589 knots, 678 mph) etc. Speeds below Mach 1 are called subsonic, between Mach 0.8-1.2 Transonic and above Mach 1.2 Supersonic.
