Geocache Description:

A quick drive-by(?) on the road between Longford and Rosedale. Trying to find a needle in a haystack could be likened to trying to find a pine cone in a pine plantation. BYO Pen Congrats to The Geo-Baristas for the FTF!

A plantation is a long, artificially-established forest, farm or estate, where crops are grown on a large scale for commercial purpose. Among the earliest examples of plantations were latifundium of the Roman Empire, which produced large quantities of wine and olive oil for export. Latifundium (Latin: lātus, "spacious" + fundus, "farm, estate") is a very extensive parcel of privately owned land. Today, latifundia are only found in Latin America, southern Spain and Italy. http://en.wikipedia.org Major plantation growing programs began in Australia in the 1960s, and there are now more than 1.97 million hectares of hardwood and softwood plantations. Around 51% of these plantations are softwood (pine). Timber is harvested from pine plantations several times during their 30-35 year life-cycle, and used for a range of products including paper, posts and sawn timber for house frames and furniture. http://www.plantations2020.com.au/plantations
