This lovely spot was rescued from developers and is now owned by us, the people of Michigan. (The deed probably says "DNR," but ...) It is maintained through a stewardship with the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy. It is a work in progress, with the bridges being revamped to make them safer and handicap-accessible. It is really a gem in the heart of Kalkaska County on the banks of the Rapid River.
Beautiful scenic walk. Bring your geo-dog and kids. You will need bug spray in the spring and summer. I especially love it in the winter after a fresh snow. This is a great place to do a bit of snowshoeing. You are looking for a ammo can.
There's a kiosk at the parking area that explains the history of the land and the rescue from developers' clutches. The coordinates at the kiosk are:
44° 48.804 N / 085° 13.159 W
Enjoy the river and head into the part of the property that Bambi's mother wouldn't want him near. The walkways can be muddy, especially in the springtime. There are plenty of berries in late summer.
