HHHP20: I drove past this morning on my way to work and the sign has indeed gone. I'm archiving rather than disabling as I've been unhappy with the location of GZ for some time. The farmer keeps cows and calves in the field you have to walk through to get to GZ and they can be aggressive. I drive through Wing every day on my way to and from work so I'll keep an eye out for the sign's reappearance, and will create something new for its relaunch. Thanks to everyone who found this cache.

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Village signs is a growing series of caches based on the ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (normally on the village green!).

Wing is a small village perched high on a hill overlooking the Aylesbury Vale in Buckinghamshire. The village sits on the main A418 road between Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard, which forms the main route between the two towns and is an important link between the Aylesbury Vale and Milton Keynes.

The earliest record of the village was from the late 10th century, when the village was recorded as Weowungum, literally meaning "Wiwa's homestead". A century later the village was recorded as Witehunge, which would suggest the presence of a heathen temple nearby. There is certainly evidence to suggest that there has been a place of worship on the site of the parish church since the Roman occupation of Britain.

More recently the village came into national prominence when the location of a new London airport was being discussed and Wing was proposed as a possible contender. A huge public outcry ensued and the Wings off Wing campaign was launched, which was eventually successful. Instead of a new airport in Wing the existing airport at Heathrow was expanded.

Today the village has a thriving community and a range of restaurants and public houses. The extensive village green is a great area for a walk on a sunny day and nearby Ascott House is still a private home of the Rothschild family to this day.

The co-ordinates at the top of the page are for the village sign. It is in a prominent location on the main road through the village, and can be seen by anyone passing through. It is a simple sign that depicts two notable community buildings in the village.

The cache

The cache is not at the above co-ordinates. In order to locate the cache you have to locate and then go to the two buildings depicted on the village sign, and answer the following questions:

One of the buildings was built in memory of Charles Cotes. In what year? 1ABC

The cache can be found at: N51 53.CCB W000 43.[A-1]DE

Depending on which building you happen to visit first you may be on the right side of the village to go and find the cache. Please follow the countryside code, and keep your dogs on a lead around livestock.
