Geocache Description:

A relatively easy offset cache which will take you to a historic part of Geelong.

If you are considering doing this cache, now is the time!

GZ for this cache will be affected by the construction of the proposed convention centre. When (if) this goes ahead the cache will be archived.

Despite its being virtually surrounded by Deakin University's Waterfront campus, the initial coords take you to a public laneway that goes back quite a way in Geelong's history. There should be no problems with the waypoint, as X marks the spot.

The first commercial use of the site to which the X is attached was Brearley's Bark Tannery from which the lane takes its name. There's an advertisement from the Colac Herald of 1885 calling for Black Wattle Bark to be delivered to the establishment. In 1909 the Geelong and Western District Preserving Company took over the site and occupied it until 1934.

The next use of the site was the Dennys Lascelles woolstore, which even had its own siding on the Cunningham Pier spur line. By 1992, when Deakin University bought the site, the building was derelict. By 2009, it had been completely refurbished and was opened as an extension to the existing campus in the neighbouring Dalgety & Co building.

Given the construction and height of the surrounding buildings you may find your GPS a little erratic, but it should be obvious when you are at the "spot".

The cache is located a short walk away at:
South 38 0F.EEE, East 144 GH.EEA

There's an alphanumeric code on the both of the X arms. If the first arm you look at is hard to read, go look at the other arm. There's a four digit number forming part of the code, that's ABCD.

Now the usual math:

E=A-B

F=B+C+D

G=A-C

H=C-D

South 38 0F.EEE, East 144 GH.EEA

GZ is in what was once called Victoria St. At the time of building the woolstores this was an area of working class housing. Things have changed! At GZ you will find something that, while originally well intentioned, is virtually pointless now unless you like parked cars!

This pic is from 1938 and gives you an idea of the area when housing was still there.
