Geocache Description:

This is a quick, urban park-n-grab. I recently completed 100 consecutive days of geocaching, and there were many times I wished for more hides like this one that I could grab during lunch or after work to keep the streak alive.

This area has undergone extensive renovation in the last few years as the old Memorial Stadium has been replaced by a Community Center, Senior Citizen Center, Aquatics Center, amphitheater, walking trail, and much more.

Construction of Memorial Stadium, originally known as Roosevelt Stadium, began in 1933 as a project of the Civilian Works Administration (CWA). The Tennessee Emergency Relief Administration (TERA) took over construction when the CWA was disbanded and completed the project in 1935. Over the years it was home to Science Hill High School Hilltoppers football and Langston High School Golden Tigers football (the local African-American school during the years of segregation). For a brief period of time in the 1970’s the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers football team played here while construction on the university campus prohibited them from using their own field. It was also the site of the Burley Bowl from 1945 - 1956, a Thanksgiving Day college football contest and parade celebrating the annual start of tobacco sales.

In 2010 the stadium was marked for demolition due to its state of disrepair. A group of citizens lobbied to have it added to the list of National Historic Places, and accomplished this feat. The stadium was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 19th, 2010. However, it was too little, too late as demolition was already scheduled to begin on July 27.

Some vestiges of the stadium remain, including the original columns marking entry to the stadium, and the newly renovated Doughboy statue memorializing city and county residents who gave their lives in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the war in Vietnam.

The posted coordinates will take you to a parking area off East Main Street. Muggles may be present when the weather is mild, so use super stealth to avoid suspiscion.
