Geocache Description:

This cache is on the Cones Dike Trail a 4.1 mile hike out and back for a total of 8.25 miles. Take lots of water and a camera as the wildlife and views from the trail are beautiful. There are many caches in the park and others along this trail. Happy caching!

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is a fish eating bird of prey. It is an impressive raptor with a length of 2 feet and a wingspan of over 5 feet. It is a common sight at the prairie and can be recognized by its brown and white underbelly and brown to black wings. Interestingly enough, it is found on all continents of the world except Antarctica. The Osprey’s vision is quite remarkable and is adapted to detecting fish from heights of nearly 120 feet above. Once its prey is spotted the Osprey will hover for just a moment before it drops out of the sky, feet first into the water. If you are lucky, you may see one flying over head with a fish in its talons. Ospreys usually mate for life. The Osprey breeds near freshwater lakes, which is one reason Paynes Prairie makes such valuable habitat for this bird. If you have the chance to drive through the Prairie on US 441 you will see a large nest on a utility pole to the west.
