Geocache Description:

Virtual cache is easy to find, but a 5 rating for terrain due to the fact that either a LONG hike or boat is required to get to the coordinates.

Located in the Great Smokey Mountains National Forest on Hazel Creek. Access via chartered boat from Fontana Marina or hike in from Fontana Dam or Hazel Creek Trail. The easiest way is to cross Fontana Lake via boat and make a short hike to the marker depending on the level of the lake.

This virtual cache is comprised of two parts.

Your first objective is to make it to the posted coordinates where you will find a marker describing the community that once thrived in this location. Take a picture of your GPS and the marker together. **NOTE**---Looks as if the Marker is back up. Just in case it is not, please be sure to print out the hint. This will give you the info needed to log this cache.

The second objective is to use the map on the marker and make your way to the Proctor Cemetary. When you arrive take a picture of the cemetary with you and your GPS included in the shot.

To get credit for the find, you must post both of the requested pictures within 14 days. If the pictures are not posted in this time period, the log will be deleted.

Be careful of wildlife (including bear, coyote, bobcat, and others). This is a beautiful wilderness, but take all necessary precautions for a safe trip and enjoy yourself. Activities here include camping, fishing (make sure you have a trout stamp or comprehensive state license), and hiking.

A little history of the community. The town was a logging community in the early 1900s, but abandoned in the 1940s. Fontana Dam was soon built after this for hydroelectric power, which created the lake that flooded part of the town (which is still under water). The National Park Service converted this area to be included in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and is visited fairly heavily today for hiking, camping, and fishing.
