Geocache Description:

Epping - Access Point #2

on the Beaver River Canoe Route

There are four access points on the Beaver River Canoe Route which break the river into three segments -

#1 Kimberley - The first leg of the route begins here, just outside of the village of Kimberley. The trip between here and the Access point #2 at Epping is about 10 km and takes about 2-3 hours. Most of the year the paddle is very gentle, although you may encounter logs and other debris, and of course beaver dams.

#2 Epping - The second leg of the route, from Epping to Heathcote, is about half the length of the first. The river is a little more open and a lot less straight, with more farmland. In the spring especially there is a little stronger current in this section of the river, but is still friendly for the novice paddler.

#3 Heathcote - The final leg of the route is about 3 km long and takes about an hour to complete. There are more small rapids and eddies along this section, and in the summer you can expect to scrape the bottom of your canoe or kayak. When we placed these caches, we didn't have an opportunity to paddle this section.

#4 Slabtown - The dam at Slabtown is the end of the route. The river continues through Clarksburg and Thornbury before it empties into Georgian Bay, but beyond Slabtown it is most often not friendly for paddlers, with dams at Clendenan, Clarksburg (Haines Dam) and Thornbury, shallow and fast water along the way.

This cache is located near the Beaver River Canoe Route, but is accessible by everyone. If you're paddling the river, it is a short walk from the Epping Access Point. If you're not, there's parking on the corner and it's a very short walk from there.
