Geocache Description:

In 2012 Shotley Parish Council and Shotley Stour Footpath Renovation Group purchased Shotley Cliff and around 50 acres of attached foreshore.   They are doing a great job in turning the cliff, the woodland on top of it and parts of the surrounding area into "Shotley Heritage Park", a country park with a number of delineated and non delineated walks and features. The intention is eventually to have information boards throughout the area portraying its historical associations and local ecology, as well as a number of viewing and seating areas for rest and relaxation. The centrepiece will be a viewing gallery sited in a concrete structure overlooking the river, which is currently in ruins. The SSFRG are attempting to precisely identify the structure, which dates back at least to World War II when the area was owned by the Navy, but it was almost certainly a part of coastal fortifications and is widely believed to have been a gun emplacement.

There are a number of ways to access this cache, if you are using the coastal path from the car parking spaces at the river wall your GPS may start going backwards at about 60 m – ignore and carry on forwards until you either decide to climb the steps or carry on a little further until you find a slightly less steep ascent.  You will then find you double back on yourself.  There are a network of paths on the cliffs which will enable you to find your way back to the river.
**please make sure that it is right in thanks**
