Bobcats

The bobcat is much larger than a house cat, has longer legs and a very short tail. Its weight ranges from 15 to 30 pounds. The bobcat's coat is yellowish to reddish-brown in color, streaked and spotted with black. Bobcats spend their time in forested areas. They are very curious, and their characteristic zigzag trail shows their tendency to investigate objects along their path. Their normal territory for one cat covers about 5 square miles, but if food is scarce, it may wander more than 20 miles in search of food. Their meals consist mainly of small animals, such as rabbits, squirrels, rats, and mice, but they can kill animals as large as deer. The bobcat usually hunts at night. It has keen eyesight and hearing. It is an excellent climber and may even catch squirrels in trees. Like most cats, it dislikes water, but has been seen fishing while standing chest deep in water. A bobcat may live up to 12 years in the wild. They are very secretive, so only the most careful observer will witness this valuable and interesting animal. It is good to remember that although not considered a dangerous or aggressive animal, the bobcat should be respected as any wild animal.
