Have you seen the movie Dot and the Kangaroo? When I was a youngster, I watched it repeatedly. “Dot” is a young Australian girl who accidentally wanders away from home while chasing a rabbit. She tumbles down a steep hill, and cannot find her way back. A kangaroo that has lost her joey rescues her. The kangaroo’s maternal instincts move her to take care of “Dot” and try to help her find her home. Dot climbs into the kangaroo’s pouch, and they hop away into the bush. On her adventure, Dot meets a laughing kookaburra, two very peculiar platypus, and a pack of hungry dingoes. This movie introduced me to the sounds of the didjeridoo, dancing cave drawings, and the aboriginal myth of the bunyip (a man-eating aquatic monster). In the end, Dot learns some important lessons about animals and survival. Her family is overjoyed when she finally makes it back home, but they don’t believe her tale of being aided by a kangaroo.
Like Dot, this cache is hidden safely in a camouflaged pouch. I doubt, however, this kangaroo can help you find it.
