Geocache Description:

Pleasant trip on packed dirt path through forested area and on paved paths past homes build in the 1920s on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Wonderful views of the lake, beach access, free parking, flush toilets on site. Creative, hidden caches of various sizes! Each cache has question to answer, coordinates and hint for the next cache in the series.

Welcome to the Tallac Historic Site. We hope you enjoy a pleasant walk around one of Tahoe’s treasured recreation sites while soaking in some local history. A little back story: A century ago, what is now the Tallac Historic Site held the "Grandest Resort in the World" and the summer retreats for three of San Francisco Bay Area's socially elite families. Today, the remains of the resort and the restored estates attract thousands of visitors annually to recapture this bygone and significant era in Tahoe's history. The Tallac Historic Site offers something for everyone and is adjacent to Kiva picnic area and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. Many paths and most buildings are accessible. Between June and September you may join a Tallac interpreter for heritage programs, guided walks, building tours, demonstrations, behind the scenes peeks, and more. A changing schedule of activities with times, places, and a detailed description is available at the Visitors Center and the Baldwin Museum. Though the buildings are closed during the winter, the site is popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Please remember that this is an historic site. Be careful and be gentle when walking around the historic structures. Please stay on trails. When you are at the first coordinates, you will not need to climb in the structure to reach the cache. The trails are both dirt and paved and all are fairly level, but always watch your footing when walking around. All areas are wheelchair accessible but not all caches. Leashed dogs are welcome, but your furry friend will have to wait outside at the last cache. Your adventure today will take you through a couple different areas. First, enjoy a pleasant journey through old growth Jeffrey Pines (they smell like butterscotch, so be sure to sniff a tree!) with views of beautiful Lake Tahoe. Then enjoy a trip back in time to the roaring twenties and imagine what life was like for the wealthy who visited Lake Tahoe's shores to play in the summer sun while you adventure on past two of the three estates at the Tallac Historic Site. BRING A PEN or AN EXCELLENT MEMORY! There are questions at each cache that you can answer at the last location for a cache treasure. Each cache has locations for the next, a question to answer, and a hint that will help you find the next cache in the sequence. Some of the caches are tricky, so remember those hints!!! Most importantly, have fun and happy geocaching!
