Ranger Rick's GRSP Bauer Unit: Heading Back Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Anteaus: Sadly it is time to archive this series. Per GRSP, I must remove the caches, not just disable them, during hunting season. Disappointed but it's gotta be!

Geocache Description:

Ranger Rick and his pals have been busy here at the Bauer Unit at Guadalupe River State Park. They have found eight Geocaches located along the paths and have left evidence of their visits.

This cache is part of a series of eight caches originally established for the Texas Nature Challenge, but available to all. The caches are all right off of two trails in the Bauer Unit of Guadalupe River State Park. The quickest way to get to the Bauer Unit if you're coming from 281 is to take Spring Branch Road to Urschel Road. Urschel Road will turn into Acker Road. The No Trespassing signs are there to make sure you don't go off the road onto private property. Stick to the roads and you'll be fine. You'll have to go through two gates on your way to the park, make sure you close them behind you. There is a low water crossing on this road, right after the first gate, so if it's been raining lately, don't try it. The entrance to the Bauer Unit will be right by the second gate (each gate, by the way, has a geocache hidden nearby).

For the best experience, have the kids start with a visit to the Discovery Center in the main part of the park, and if available, check out a backpack of tools for them to take a closer look at nature as they walk the trails in search of the geocaches. Look around the Discovery Center and pick up a Geotrails Passport to see if you can correctly match Ranger Rick and his pals tracks. The Center is a very child friendly space and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 9am – 4pm.

The first cache in the series is near the parking area and contains some Passports for those who didn't stop by the main portion of the park or print them out online before coming. After you enter the trail from the parking area, turn onto the Deer Pasture Loop trail to begin the rest of your adventure. Once you reach the end of the Deer Pasture Loop trail, head back along the Bauer Trail toward the parking area to get the remaining caches.

The trail is about 2.6 miles in length, and offers some shade. Whenever going for a hike or bike excursion, make sure you bring plenty of water, trail snacks, sunscreen, and maybe some bug spray too! Rugged strollers will work if you have infants or toddlers with you. If your concerned that hiking it will take too long, these trails are great for biking!

The cache is a 8" x 6" Lock-N-Lock available to all but designed for the preteen crowd. The stash is all child friendly, please trade fairly and keep the youngsters in mind. In the cache is a stamp of an animal footprint. See if you can match it with the tracks of Ranger Rick and his friends on your Passport.

Please leave the Clue Card and animal track stamp in the cache.

This cache was placed with permission from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and a cache permit is on file at the GRSP's office.

Be sure to observe all park rules and hours. There is a self-pay station at the trail-head. If you have a Parks pass, leave it visible on the dashboard of your vehicle. See the Guadalupe River State Park website for more information: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/guadalupe-river.
