Geocache Description:

Join the Georgia Geocachers Association at our July meeting on July 13th in Northwest Georgia for a cool look at the history of Tunnel Hill Georgia!   Watermelon and new caches await at shady creekside Sloan Picnic Area, and an optional walking tour of the Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel, created before the Civil War, is also available!

For those who are interested in railroads and/or Civil War history, Tunnel Hill Georgia offers both!  Our July meeting place is less than a mile from the Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel, the first major railroad tunnel ever built in the South -- build entirely by hand,  prior to the Civil War.  The tunnel and a small non-profit museum are available to the public and we have scheduled special walking tours of the tunnel at 10:15 and 11:00 AM -- these tours, including the museum and the tunnel last 1-1/2 to 2 hours and there is a discounted group fee for geocachers of $3.00 per adult.  PLEASE RSVP with how many adults and children want to take the tour, and your preferred time.  (Tours go in groups of 20 people.)  Team Bear-Cat (Mike and Nancy) will coordinate with the tour guides & collect the tour fees at the museum (see waypoint).   Tours in a 8-passenger cart are available for any for whom walking 1/2-mile or more would be a challenge.   (You do not have to take the tour to log the meeting smiley, but it will be delightfully COOL in the tunnel!)

The official meeting will be at 1:00 PM at the Sloan Picnic Area.  Shady, covered picnic pavilions by a lazy creek and more nearby caches. Fresh local watermelon will be provided, a brief business meeting to review upcoming events will be conducted and assorted swag will be given away. Feel free to bring a picnic, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages and join us for a lazy summer geo-day!

There are numerous caches in and around this city park and on the nearby Tunnel Hill Heritage Center battlefield trails.  We have permission to place additional caches prior to the event!
