Geocache Description:

Aiken is an unincorporated community in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, United States, near the Mississippi River. It was originally a whistle stop for the Chicago Great Western Railroad. Whistle stop was only used when a need for the train to pick up someone, otherwise the train went right on through. Did you miss seeing Aiken? Well don’t worry this small area of homes historically truly is Aiken Illinois but today is referred to as part of Galena. This is our first cash! My wife and I have been Geocaching for a little over a year. We enjoy seeking and finding caches. We chose this first location because of the beautiful drive, and due to our many afternoon cruises through the countryside. Once you have located, and signed the log for the cache, Travel further south down the road and while facing the railroad tracks look to your left. You will notice a long stretch of railroad. In July 2011 it has been reported on average a downpour of rain of 18 inches or more! This took place in such a short period of time that it caused massive flooding in the surrounding Galena area. The area that you will be looking at was affected so drastically that a minimum of approximately 3 to 4 block length of railroad, river frontage road, all washed out into the river as if it was never even there. The section of riverfront cottages miraculously were not destroyed! The scene after the flooding was devastating. The view was astounding with bent twisted track, washed out railroad ties, and literally tons of rock completely washed out into the river. As you see this is now repaired after over a year of work to the road. If you drive down over the tracks you will come to an area in between section of houses and the road dips down. The area that dips downward was actually not there after this flood. In its original form the road was level all the way across. Hope you enjoyed your drive and thank you for this wonderful pastime. Quick easy find! Cache only has room for the log sheet, so bring your own writing utencil.
