Virginia City History
Virginia City, MT celebrates its 150th Anniversary in 2013!

A booming gold town by 1864, Virginia City was home to some 10,000 prospectors, merchants, and homesteaders. According to www.VirginiaCity.com, Virginia City: was one of Overland Mail & Express Company’s main stations; featured camels for freight and packing; boasted electricity in 1892; opened Montana’s first public school in 1866; was home to the first company of Montana National Guard in 1885; had the territory’s first newspaper; was the first outfitting point for trips to Yellowstone; served as the first administrative site for Yellowstone National Park; was the capitol of Montana in 1865; and treated residents and guests with Montana’s first theater company in 1864.

Today, Virginia City is a living history town with outdoor museums, stagecoach tours, horseback rides, train rides, theater productions, shops, restaurants, icecream, hand-thrown pizza, candy, a salloon, and the largest collection of old-west artifacts outside of the Smithsonian.
