Founded in 1872 by John Douglas, who homesteaded the first 320 acres. Charles Miles Beak built this cabin after having lived in the Cariboo for a period of time. He was in the business of buying and raising dairy cattle, beef cattle and pigs. He returned home to England for a short period of time with his family to raise more money. On his return he found a Irishman named Alfred Morton, had taken over his land claim on a technicality. Beak began buying up more property in the area around Douglas Lake. By Oct.1883 he had acquired 8,000 acres, 5000 head of cattle and 60 horses. He knew a syndicate of men were controlling the price of beef in B.C., so he contacted the manager J.B. Greaves. On Oct. 12, 1883 Beaks gave Greaves an undivided half of his properties. Two other men Thomson and Ward along with Beaks and Greaves agreed to form a cattle ranch at Douglas Lake, and incorporated it as the Douglas Lake Cattle Co.
