Calico Ghost Town! Originally a boom town in the 1880's due to the discovery of silver. Then a ghost town. Then Walter Knott (of Knott's Berry Farm fame) bought it in 1951 and restored and transformed it into a slice of the Old West for all of us to enjoy. It is currently owned and maintained by San Bernardino County. It's not large, but it is a wonderful place to escape to for a day trip. (And it is one of our favorite camping spots! Full hook-ups. Hot, free showers. Beautiful views. Lots of opportunities for hiking, 4x4'ing and shooting. Good old-fashioned fire pits. So quiet at night. So many stars in the sky. And free unlimited admission to the town for everyone who camps!) You can visit the Calico website at www.calicotown.com. The hardest thing standing in your way to logging a successful find of this cache is its remote location - so far away from "the city." The second hardest thing would be to pull it out, log your visit, and replace the cache without compromising its position as it is in a fairly high-traffic, easy-to-access, high-visibility area. (Please try to be discreet.)
The container is a tall, wide-mouth mayonaise jar with a red plastic lid. The original contents included some money, jewelry and the more common and fairly obligatory baubles and trinkets.
Enjoy!
