Geocache Description:

Katelios is one of the southernmost villages of Kefalonia, and is situated on the Western part of the Bay of Katelios. Katelios is divided into two parts, lower (Kato) and upper (Ano). The neighbouring isle, Zakynthos, can usually be seen. On very clear days it is also possible to see Killini and the mountains of the Peloponnese, in mainland Greece.

“Ano” Katelios, a picturesque village of natural beauty, occupies the lower part of the valley coming down from Pastra, with a river passing through its centre. This river is unique in Kefalonia for the fact that it has natural water flowing throughout the whole year. The village of Kato Katelios was composed of only two or three houses at the turn of the 20th century and became a stopover point for workers and merchants or generally anything that came or went from the sea. The two tavernas of Kritikos and Haberis, with their fresh fish and wine, were important places for all workers who found themselves isolated in Katelios by bad sea weather. After the First and Second world wars, and up until the present, the fish tavernas played much the same role, when all of Argostoli descended to taste their delicious wines and the fresh fish specially selected from the local fishermen. “Kato” Katelios has a small beach, with a few tavernas and bars right behind. Agia Barbara is another, more popular beach – just a short walk away, past the river. Mounda beach is on the other side of the bay. Katelios has its roots as a fishing village of Kefalonia with a great maritime tradition. Karavopetra (the “boat stone” – due to its appearance), sits perched on a reef just outside the pier of Katelios. Local tradition holds that this stone is all that remains of an ancient port that was constructed and used by the Venetians. This is the first of 12 caches designed to show you around the area. The series can be done by car or on foot. On foot it will take about 75 mins at a leisurely pace, not including searching time. By car obviously much quicker, but if you have the time, the walk will enable you to see much more of what Katelios has to offer. This is the main parking area for Kato Katelios. You will see a kiosk as you approach the waterfront, turn to the left for parking. Whether you continue on foot or by car, after finding this cache you will be continuing on to your left, walking over, or driving through the 'river' ... also known as 'the duck pond' (not usually much more than a trickle in the summer) mentioned above. The roads between #1, 2 and 3 are not Tarmac or concrete but are well compacted and used all the time. ***NB!! UNFORTUNATELY YOU CAN NO LONGER DRIVE BETWEEN NUMBERS 1 and 2 ... you can still drive the circular (except for number 12) but you can no longer drive them in order unless you go round the road from 1 to 2 which will involve passing 3 ... I would probably recommend you start at 2, do them in order to 12 and then do 1 You are looking for a magnetised film canister covered in silver gaffer tape. There is a little tree cover here which may interfere with GPS. We've taken several sets of coordinates and these seem to be the most reliable. NB!! You will find a number in each of the caches in the circular, please make a note of each one if you would like a badge to display on your profile. All of our Kefalonian caches are being maintained by friends on the island in between our visits.
