A steep and narrow road, Horokiwi road is accessed from SH2 just south of Petone, but the turn-off requires that you are heading in a northerly direction. If traveling from the Hutt you need to drive south to the Ngauranga interchange, and then head back to Petone, adding 8km to your journey.
The road itself travels over and around the associated hills to a dead end after approx 6.5km. It's main use is to serve the farms, and residents of a number of life style blocks along the way.
On a fine day there are great views of the harbour and greater Wellington area to be had and it can be considered to be in the nature of a scenic drive.
The cache is placed a short distance from the SH2 turnoff so if you have already found the other cache(s) further up the road you will be spared what can be a slightly challenging drive.
