The life of Black Hannah Johnson reads like a 'ghost in the wind"....
Black Hannah was listed in the North Tonawanda census of 1842, having been born somewhere in the South in 1803. It was reported that she made her way here via the Underground Railroad. John Chadwick owned a farm back then along Sweeny Street. He allowed her and her husband the use of a cabin at the back of his property which was then the dead end of Elmwood.
Located in the woods, she was often thought of as a fortune teller (specializing in reading tea leaves) and occasionally a witch! However she was well loved and trusted by neighbors who often left their children in her care when they went on a day trip to the big city of Buffalo. She also helped with housework and was known as a good cook, gardener and town story teller.
When she died in 1886, her funeral was well attended by neighbors and local dignitaries! It is reported that there is an unmarked grave here in Sweeney Cemetery that was donated by the Chadwicks.
If you find the cache, can you also find where she rests in peace....or is she once again hidden in plain sight?
There in no need to disturb any markers here. But please enjoy the names of original town folks, from where many of our street names came from.
Absolutely No Night Caching!
