From Caacupe to Santa Barbara Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Trail Reader: I'll bet there isn't poison oak like this in Paraguay! Unfortunately, the area is becoming unsafe for caching due to the noxious plant, so I hiked out and retrieved the container with my long litter-grabbers. The cache story is dear to my heart, but it's time for archival. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

Caacupe, Paraguay (GC20GFW) was a puzzle cache of which I was particularly fond. However, it was not well-visited, with only 23 finds in three-and-a-half years. Rather than let it languish, I have decided to reformat and update it as a traditional.

"My son has been serving in the Peace Corps in Paraguay for two years, since September 2007, and recently requested and received a one-year extension. His new assignment will take him to the city of Caacupe where he will work for a Dutch NGO responsible for tree distribution throughout southern Paraguay. Caacupe, founded in 1770, is the capital of the department of Cordillera, as well as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Caacupe. It is also renowned as a pilgrimage site, drawing crowds of more than 300,000 during its December 8th Festival of Our Lady of the Miracles of Caacupe." --From the original cache, Caacupe, Paraguay My son eventually spent three more years in Paraguay, finally returning to the United States in December 2012. Now six months later, he is living and working as a landscape designer in Santa Barbara. I regret never visiting him in Paraguay, but am so glad that he's finally home. The cache is a camo'd plastic container filled with small trade items, a log, and a pen. Note: As of October 1918, there is active poison oak in the area of the cache. A slight repositioning of the hide will avoid most of it. However, please use care when poking around.
