Geocache Description:

Located just east of old State Highway 44, this cache is near the locked gate to the cemetery.  Apparently this cemetery is used very little.  Park at the gate and do not enter.  Pleas be discreet due to the residences and traffic nearby.

CUBA, meaning tank in Spanish, was officially settled in 1879 by the McCoy and Atencio familes from the Jemez area.  CUBA was first named Nacimiento as seen on an old 1776 Spanish map, named after the mountain to the east.

In Navajo, CUBA means "gopher water" and is said to have come from an elderly Navajo Chief named Hastin Na'zisih, who lived by a spring where there were many gophers.

The name became CUBA when the post office was established in 1887.  CUBA was incorporated as a village in 1964.

These "Spirit" caches are a series placed at or near New Mexico cemeteries to pay respect to the pioneer ancestors who settled and formed this community.

We solicit your volunteer supposrt as a cacher to place a "Spirit" cache at or near a cemetery of your choosing.
